For this week’s mission (should you decide to accept it), I challenge you to:
* Tell us about your “other” hobbies or interests outside of genealogy and family history research, writing, speaking, etc. Be mindful of your family’s privacy, though!
* Write a blog post of your own, respond with a comment to this post, or write a Facebook status post or a Google+ Stream post.
My other hobbies, outside of genealogy, are all over the place, I guess. I like to knit and crochet and have attempted to do beadwork, but my eyes and hands are against that one.
I love photography, especially nature photography. Over the last month, I have had a blast photographing the birds and squirrels in our backyard. The pictures aren’t anywhere near perfect, but it makes me happy just the same.
I love to cook and want to get back into cake decorating. Maybe that will happen.
I also love to read. I have always had a love of words and books, reading and writing. I enjoy writing poetry, too.

I wish I were good at photography. It is such an interesting hobby and creates beautiful work. And while I can cook, nothing I make is ever particularly pretty. I admire those that can do cake decorating.

I wish I were good at photography, too. I enjoy it, but I’m a long way from being “good enough”. We’ve always heard the secret to great photography is take a lot of pictures. Without fail, every professional photographer David has talked to has said the same thing. I guess it is another version of “practice makes perfect”. I definitely take a lot of pictures, but most get deleted, thanks to poor eyesight, shaky hands, and a lens that gets soft at the range I need it to be clear. Oh well. At least it is fun and it captures the moments. I am sure you’re better at it than you think. We’re often our own worst critics. Keep trying. Never give up and most of all, have fun. If it is something you wish to do, then go for it. Don’t let Negative Nellies take that joy from you.
Most of what I cook isn’t particularly pretty either. It serves the purpose of filling tummies, not awing eyes. But, when I was much younger, the cakes that I decorated were a bragging point for my late father-in-law. I started off by taking a Wilton course through the mail (this was 10 years before home computers were a thing). Each month, I learned a different technique and got lots of practice. Amazon sells a Wilton course now. Maybe you could give that a try, if cake decorating is of interest to you. My mailings back then included the notebook pages as well as the tips and bags and other tools. I think they are packaged separately on Amazon now as in the course itself is one thing and the kit for that course is another.
Other than cakes for general every day and for my late father-in-law’s store, I made a multi-layer wedding cake for my cousin’s wedding and a huge multi-layer, columned cake for my grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary. That one had a fountain and all sorts of things. It was great fun…and stress…to make that one and get it delivered to the venue safely. I made one for a baby shower once that got dropped upside down on the way to the shower. That was very upsetting, but thankfully, it still tasted fine. 🙂

I love photography, too and try to take photos of birds, but my best success is photos of flowers. They don’t move (unless you count the wind)!

Cool! I love photographing flowers, too. Ah, yes, the wind. When the wind is blowing them around, I call them “dancing flowers”. It does make it a big challenge to photograph them. Do you live in a typically windy place? Here on the Gulf Coast, wind is almost always here, sometimes worse than others.
I will have to go visit your blog and look for your flowers. 🙂

Actually I only post photos on Facebook. My blogs are for family stories.

Oh, okay. I do my best to avoid Facebook. It has been nothing but heartache and headache for me. I use FB Messenger to stay in touch with the kids and only go on regular FB when compelled to do so. Have a blessed day. 🙂
